THE FLEURIEU ART PRIZE 2011 4 November - 5 December 2011

Full Program of Events for The Fleureiu Art Prize 2011 will be published in October 2011 and will be available on the website.

2011 Activities

Schools Project

The Fleurieu Art Prize Schools Project, in partnership with the Willunga Farmers Market, is an avenue through which the art prize seeks to build and provide opportunities to young artists.

Established artists deliver talks and classes in local schools to make the experience of painting the local landscape meaningful to the students and provide school students with the opportunity to be involved in the Fleurieu Art prize.

Students involved in the sessions are invited to contribute images of the work they have developed to an on-line exhibition. A judging panel will select finalists from the online gallery whose work will be exhibited at the Willunga Farmers Market on 19 November.

Field Research Project

The Fleurieu Landscape Art & Environment aims to provide intellectual substance to the Fleurieu Art Prize by promoting stimulating discussion amongst artists, environmentalists and community members about the nature of contemporary landscape art and how it can inform the current debate about the environment.

The field research project was convened in March 2011 with artists coming together with environmental experts from Flinders University, Mayor Lorraine Rosenberg, local businesses, wineries, indigenous representatives and local community members to explore and discuss the environmental issues topical in the region.  The group have participated in two weekend research trips and are now working in their studios to create a body of work which will be exhibited as part of the main program in November 2011.

The artworks and documentation will be exhibited at Fox Creek Winery during the Fleurieu Art Prize 2011, 4 November – 5 December 2011.

One Day Painting Competitions 13 & 20 November 2010

Drawing inspiration from Anghiari in Tuscany, Italy the One Day Painting Competitions held at Wirra Wirra, McLaren Vale and Whalers Inn, Encounter Bay, were open to artists of all levels and mediums.

Artists spent a day creating landscape art for the chance to win a $1000 cash and wine prize in the beautiful McLaren Vale and Southern Fleurieu regions.

With over 70 artists at each event the competitions were a sell out.  A fun way for artists to spend a day outdoors creating a landscape artwork.

Artists visited local iconic sites and spaces in the McLaren Vale and Fleurieu regions and created an ‘en plein air’ landscape artwork throughout the day. At the end of the day the works were judged by a panel, while the artists and their guests enjoy a glass of wine, causal meal and jazz music.

With so many wonderful and varied artworks - including printmaking, sculpture, drawing, painting and collage - many works were sold on the spot and crowds were inspired and engaged by the quality and diversity of artworks created in just one day.

Prizes were awarded in two categories, emerging artists and established artists, and were decided by independent judging panels. The panels were – McLaren Vale: Geoff Wilson, David Dridan, Nicky Downer, and Victor Harbor: Jane Hylton, Trevor Newman, Roe Gartleman.
